If there is something that anime creators are good at, it is making you fall in love with the cast, who are also usually relatable and unforgettable. It is almost impossible to watch a whole anime series and forget the main characters and what made him or her so amazing. That is why the death of a character is usually so sad and unforgettable. Today, we at MTG Lion have come up with a list of the saddest anime deaths that we have seen up to now. The moment they die, how other characters reacted, and their role in a show have all been accounted for in this compilation.

Otonashi from Angel Beats!

This series follows the protagonist during his time in the afterlife. It is only halfway through the series that we get to discover how he died. In the series, Otonashi has decided to become a doctor to help people in honor of his late sister Hatsune. He finds himself stuck underground after a train accident with others. He starts caring for the wounded and helping to ration food. In his final moments, he fills out an insurance card to become an organ donor. However, he soon passes away as the rescue effort starts.

Eren’s Mother from  Attack on Titan

This one scene helped to introduce us to the horrible world of the Titans. Trapped and unable to escape, she spends her last moment alive ensuring that her children will not fall victim to these gigantic creatures. Not only did Eren lose his mother that day, but he also had to watch as she severed in two and eaten by one of the monsters. The saddest moment came when Eren was pulled away as he cried out for his now dead mother.

Ace from One Piece

When a family member passes away, it is always tough, and this is no different in the anime world. After being rescued by his brother Luffy and the gang, he turns back to face Akainu, his captor. He dies as he shields Luffy from a hot smoldering fist. Unfortunately, it lands on his chest, and the expression of his crewmates is heartbreaking as he utters his last words.

Ushio Okazaki from Clannad After Story

This death takes place in the continuation of the first Clannad series. Tomoya learns that his daughter must die after he learns that she has the same illness that took his wife. The death of Ushio takes place as she is headed on a trip that her father promised her. This scene is made even harder by the fact that Tomoya had recently accepted his past and was now raise his daughter on his own. Having to witness, the death of the two people that he loves the most leaves him in a bottomless depression.

Jiraiya from Naruto Shippuden

It is usually a sign of honor when a student surpasses the master. However, this particular instance only left viewers in tears. When he encounters Pain, Jiraiya does his best to thwart his plans. However, towards the end, he realizes that it is futile and that pain will end him. With his last strength, he writes the secret to destroying Pain on the back of his toad, Fukasaku.

Nina Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist

Despite the fact that we met this girl in only one episode, the tragedy that befalls her left all fans of the series mouth wide open. It is not just the death of Nina, which cuts deep into the hearts of this series but the context behind her death. His father performs a human-chimera experiment, where he fuses her with her dog. He does this in the hope of keeping his silence as a state alchemist. When the Elric brothers fail to undo this evil deed, Scar kills her out of mercy.

Nagisa Furukawa  from Clannad After Story

This tear-inducing love story ends sadly. Nagisa has never had great health, and she has had a chronic illness all of her life. Once she and Tomoya decide that they will have a baby, the stress on giving birth proves too much, and she finally dies. Once the baby is born, the husband is left with a mortified stare as he coddles the motherless newborn.

L from Death Note

The death of this genius detective led to mixed feelings for most fans of the series. On the one hand, you want to root for L to stop Kira, the mass murderer. However, you also want to see Light, the protagonist, escape capture. No matter what you feel, the death of L left the series feeling dry and hollow. Moments before he died, L could feel that it was his time. Worst of all, it came from a person he had considered to be his only friend.

Lelouch vi Britannia from  Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

In an age of war and hate, Lelouch devises a master plan to save the world. It will entail him becoming a wicked ruler who is eventually killed to give the world peace. As the world scapegoat, all hate him, and he allows himself to be killed by his best friends Suzaku. As he falls to his death, only his sister mourns him as everyone else celebrates, not knowing what he sacrificed.

Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist

We have chosen this death to take the top spot because of the nature of the character. This character was just impossible not to love. Once he discovers the motives of the Fuhrer, he is murdered by Envy the Homunculus.
