When most people think about golf, they do not associate it with the movies. In fact, when golf and rankings are put in the same sentence, most people think of golf courses or golf pros. However, there have been quite a number of movies about golf over the years. Here are some of finest golf movies that have been produced over the years. All of these are a good way to expand your knowledge on golf.  

1. Tin Cup

Kevin Costner was best known for his baseball movies. However, he decided to take a swing at golf with his movie, which was titled Tin Cup in 1996. He played a washed up and cynical former professional golfer who was now working as a driving range instructor. Eventually, some of his friends managed to convince him to have a go at the Us Open. The climax of the movie is when the main character McAvoy tries to get a ball across the lake in a move that costs him a dozen shots. 

2. The Greatest Game Ever Played

The movie is based on a book written by Mark Frost by the same name. It was released in 2005 and was an absolute him among golfing fans. The story follows the life of Francis, who is played by Shia LaBeouf and his win over pros such as Ted Ray and Harry Vardon at the US Open of 1913. That victory has been credited with making golf a popular sport in the United States. The news of how a young man had beaten the pros quickly spread all over the US. 

3. Happy Gilmore

The comedy, which starred Adam Sandler, may not seem like a major hit at face value. However, the movie remains one of the best comedies he has ever made. It was full of great elements that managed to walk the thin line between stupid and sentimental. It follows the life of a psychotic hockey goon who has great adoration for his grandma. The movie even managed to squeeze in a romance subplot. 

4. A Gentleman’s Game

The movie, which was created in 2001, follows the life of a young boy working as a caddy during the summer. During his time there, he learns important life lessons on the haves and have-nots. The young boy was played by Mason Gamble a 13-year old boy who is well on his way to becoming a great golfer. With his father’s help, he quickly learns how to be a golfer by caddying for some of the best players in town. Under the wing of a pro, the young Timmy is a crash course about golf and life. 

5. Seven Days in Utopia 

The main star of the movie, Robert Duvall, plays in this 2011 movie, which is an adaptation of a book written by David L. Cook. The story starts with a major tournament loss that leads to a meltdown for pro golfer Luke Chisholm. He then proceeds to make matters worse when he drives his car into a fence in Utopia, TX. The property happens to be the property of a former touring golfer who decided to take Luke under his wing and help him recover. 

6. The Legend of Bagger Vance

The movie features some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Will Smith and Charlize Theron. For those who understand golf, this movie explains why it is important to have a great caddie. They are not just there to carry your luggage. They also act as the swing coach, a friend, and a voice of reason. The main character is Rannulph Junuh, who is played by Matt Damon. He is a promising golfer who was traumatized after serving in World War 1. He loses interest in the game until Bagger Vance comes along to help him fight his inner demons. Overall, a fun flick to watch. 

7. Dead Solid Perfect

The movie, which stars Randy Quaid, gives an insight into life on a pro tour. It is based on a book written by Dan Jenkins by the same title. The book is considered by some to be among one of the finest books ever written about the game of golf. 

8. Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius

The movie is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest golfers to live. The story follows the life of Bobby Jones from being a hot-tempered young man until he became the most famous golfer on earth in his time. 

9. Pat and Mike

This Tracy-Hepburn movie is definitely a must-watch. It follows the life of Katherine Hepburn as she tries to win a club championship. However, her boorish husband is a jerk and he does not give her support. If you love watching old movies, you will love this movie. 

10. Caddyshack

The movie is a cult classic among golfers; it is a favorite of many people here at golfovernight.com. The movie is a great classic, which manages to combine the comedic talent of some of the finest comedy actors of their time. The movie features countless memorable lines and clothing styles that made the 80s great.
