What is the Perfect Golf Swing?
Whether you are teaching a professional golfer or an amateur golfer, the goal is always the same. The golfers just want to be able to hit the golf ball better. However, that is easier said than done. Despite that, there are a few key areas, which can help you achieve the perfect golf swing. Here are the aspects of a golf swing that we at RunRex believe are crucial to a perfect golf swing.
- The Grips
To achieve a good grip, you should hold the club in the fingers of your left hand and close the fingers around the shaft. You should then bring the top of the left hand over so that the two top knuckles are visible.
With the fingers in place, pinch the forefinger and thumb so that they form a V, which points to the right shoulder. Now the right hand should be placed on the shaft using an overlapping, interlocking, or 10-finger grip.
You should now ensure the pad of the right thumb is precisely over the left thumb. The forefingers and the thumb should form a V that points towards the right shoulder. The grips pressure should be moderate. You want to ensure that your fingers are firm on the shaft, but they are still relaxed enough to let your swing be natural and smooth.
- The Set Up
It is perhaps one of the essential factors in achieving the perfect swing as well as how your entire body is set up to make the perfect shot at the ball. If you are not able to reach the ideal set up, you will not hit the ball with enough power, or you will hit it in the wrong direction.
To achieve a good set up, place the hand on the club. With the feet close together, bring the club to the front with the arms extended to waist high. Begin to bend forward from the hip and place the club on the ground. After that, spread the feet so that they are the width of your shoulders and flex your knees a bit.
Ensure that weight distribution on both sides of your body is equal. It should also be shifted slightly towards the balls of the feet. When you achieve this, you are in a great position to swing at the ball.
- The Backswing
When you can achieve a good set up, you will notice that the shoulders and arms create a triangle. When starting the backswing, move the club with the arms, hands, and shoulders all the while maintaining the triangle.
When the club gets to the waist position, begin to hinge the wrists upwards. As you continue to move back, wait until the left arm is parallel to the ground. You should now form an L shape with the shaft and the left arm. Ensure that you tilt the club in a manner that ensures the butt is pointing at the target. Now you can slowly begin the process of getting the club back to the ball for the perfect impact.
- Finishing
Before you can smack the ball, you need to get the downswing right. To start the downswing, rotate the left hip so that most of the weight rests on the left leg. As that is happening, the club and the arms should follow the on-plane delivery position. As the club makes contact with the ball, the hip should begin to rotate towards the left.
The club will start shifting towards the left upwards. When you get to the final position, the hands will with be over the left shoulder, and the front of the body will be facing the target. The weight will have shifted to the left side of the body.
Besides that, the right heel should be off the ground and the top of the right foot facing towards the target. It will help you balance your body in the finishing position.
The Contact with the Ball
One way to tell whether your swing was perfect is how you make contact with the ball. You must ensure you keep your head down and eyes facing the ball to see the kind of connection you make. If you make contact with the centre of your club’s face, you should hardly feel any sensation in your hands.
However, if your swing was off and the ball makes contact with the toe or heel of the club, you feel a sting sensation in both hands as the shaft begins to vibrate. It is a sensation you will have to get to until you learn to make a good swing.
The Follow Through

This step that most amateur players often neglect. However, the follow-through is crucial to the swing. If the follow through is not there, some of the power will undoubtedly be lost. In such an instance, the distance will be affected. Besides that, it could cause you to hook or slice the ball. The result is that the ball does not head towards the preferred target.
