25 Do’s And Don’ts Of Skiing Etiquette

25 Do’s And Don’ts Of Skiing Etiquette

Experienced skiers will tell you that half the fun of skiing is having peace with everyone else. Here a few do’s and don’ts that we at RunRex think will help to make your ski vacation fun.

1.    Share a Lift with a Stranger

Some people may insist on cutting the line so that they can share the lift with a friend. If you do that, it will lead to some scornful looks and remarks from other skiers.

2.    Do Not Light Up a Cigarette on a Chair Lift

The problem with this is that the other rider may not be a smoker. In fact, they may be allergic or asthmatic, and they have no way of getting off the chair.

3.    Get Ski Lessons

If you hit the slopes without any skills, you could injure fellow skiers. Besides that, you could end up causing a pileup and causing people to break their ski equipment.

4.    Do Not Ski Above Your Level

Learning to ski is a slow and grueling process. Trying to ski above your level as a personal challenge endangers yourself and others around you.

5.    Avoid Using Too Much Ski Lingo

If you use too much ski lingo that you just learned, it is confusing to everyone else. Besides that, you could end up embarrassing yourself and your friends.

6.    Give Right Of Way

The person in front always has the right of way. No matter how slow they are moving, it is up to you to avoid colliding with them.

7.    You Have to Help Other

If a fellow skier wipes out just a short distance from you, you have to stop and help. Buzzing past them is considered rude.

8.    Do not be Condescending

Making overly showy comments about the slope’s easiness is not encouraged. You look like a braggart to your fellow skiers.

9.    Keep Your Speed Down in the Beginner slopes

No one wants a speed demon hurtling down the slope past him or her as he or she is trying to learn the ropes. You could cause serious injury to inexperienced skiers.

10.    Avoid Stopping in Middle of the Slope

The middle of the slope is for skiing. Do not stop there to talk on your phone or take selfies. Other skiers could bump into you.

11.    Avoid Skipping the Queue

No matter how good you think, your reason is, skipping the queue is wrong. In fact, it might lead to a few insults and angry stares.

12.    Avoid dropping Litter

There are numerous bins all over the resort. Besides that, littler could act as an obstacle for some skiers causing wipeouts.

13.    Give Skiers Space

Unless it is in the middle of the peak season, the runs have few people on them. Avoid getting all up in people’s personal space.

14.    Know Your Personal Limits

If you know for sure, your skills do not allow you to do flips or jumps, avoid them. You could end up causing runs to be shut down as medical personnel evacuate you.

15.    Know About Avalanche Safety

If you do not know how to avoid avalanches, you could cause serious problems for everyone else. You could also ruin a dream vacation for some skiers.

16.    Put the Gear where it Belongs

Some people may be tempted to drop the gear on the restaurant floor of where they are eating. It just means there is less space for everyone else.

17.    Dress Casual

Keep your dressing causal. A ski resort is a place to have fun. There is no reason to go flashing your expensive watches or other garments during a ski trip.

18.    Share the Tables

If you are at a resort during peak season, the tables fill up quite fast. Do not hog an entire table. Invite anyone that you think looks stranded.

19.    Walk Slowly inside the Lodge

Everyone take regular breaks in the lodge when skiing. However, remember that you are wearing a helmet and heavy boots. If you are not careful, you could cause injuries.

20.    Do Not Call People Out

After a day on the slopes, some people feel obliged to embellish their experience. You do not have to call them out for that.

21.    Do Not Picnic Below a Lip or Ridge

It is a common belief that this is safe to do; it is not safe. Doing that puts you and the person who might come honing over the lip in danger.

22.    Do Take the Weather Reports with a Pinch of Salt

Look into what the experienced skiers say about the weather. Sometimes, the reports are inaccurate or just mere estimations.

23.    Turn over Your Keys

At a ski resort, it is a great opportunity to drink. However, avoid getting into your car. Simply take public transportation.

24.    Do Rinse

When you come off the slopes, do not simply jump into the hot tub. You still have the stench all over you, and you could ruin it for everyone else.

25.    Pace Yourself

Since most ski resorts are at high attitudes, failing to pace could be quite dangerous. It is especially so if you have been drinking. Exhaustion and attitude sickness could set in causing you to cut short your trip.
